Hi there. I'm a musicology student from Berlin and I choosed Czeslaw as a topic for my undergraduate exam. I tried very hard to find information about him, but besides some biographic details there is not much written in German or English about contemporary music from Poland. I guess there is much in newspapers and Rock magazines about him, but unfortunately I don't speak Polish. My exam comes closer (11.5.), and I'm running out of time a bit. If somebody could help me with one of the following question, this would be really nice.
1. I read that in the 60s only professional composers were allowed to write music themselves. Is that true? Why? What were the laws for that?
2. Was there something like a Hippie movement in Poland? Were they suppressed?
3. I read Niemen was accused in 1971 by a teacher for his behaviour on stage. Could someone provide details on that?
4. What was the audience like? Was it only young people, or people from every age and social background?
5. How did musicians react on Niemen? Did they try to copy his style? Did some musicians not like him for some reason?
6. Czeslaw changed his style very often. How did the listeners react? Was the late, electronic-pop-Niemen more successful than the free-jazz-influenced Niemen? Did his record sales change over time?
7. What about his private life?
8. How did the media present him. Were there newspapers etc. that tried to ruin his reputation? Did journalists try to protect him against this?
I'd appreciate every information you can kindly offer. Also, if somebody knows good literature about Polish rock music or Czeslaw, this would be very helpful too. Thanks a lot,
John
